World's Top 100 Most Livable Cities

A new Mercer study ranks cities by the quality of life they offer expatriate executives and their families across the world

What foreign postings are most coveted by expatriate executives? To find out, Mercer Human Resource Consulting, which provides advice to multinational companies on international assignments, has come up with a global ranking of the world's most livable cities based on 39 key quality-of-life issues. They include political stability, currency-exchange regulations, political and media censorship, school quality, housing, the environment and public safety. Mercer collected the data between September and November of 2006 and considered 215 cities around the globe. Switzerland's main commercial and cultural center, Zurich, topped the list this year, followed by Geneva, and Vancouver and Vienna, which tied for third. Is it time to move back to Australia? 4 of the top 10 most livable cities in the world are Down Under, with Melbourne taking the 2nd spot, Perth 4th, Adelaide tied for 7th, and Sydney tied for 9th in the recent Economist survey.

Canada took the top spot with Vancouver, Toronto 5th, and Calgary 7th. Vienna, Geneva, Helsinki, and Zürich were also on the Top 10 list.

The study looked at 5 broad categories

stability
health care
culture and environment
education
infrastructure
and 30 subcategories to determine the ranking.

Melbourne 'third most' livable city in world

 Australian cities hold three of the top 10 spots in the Economist Intelligence Unit's liveability poll, which ranks cities on five factors: health-care, stability, culture and environment, education and infrastructure.

Melbourne ranked the highest of any Australian city, coming third in the poll recognising 140 cities.

Perth was equal fifth with Calgary in Canada, Sydney shared ninth place with Zurich in Switzerland, Adelaide in 11th place and Brisbane 16th on the list.

Vancouver is the world's easiest city to live in while Harare is the toughest, the survey said, putting Europe and north America at the top while many African and Asian cities struggle behind.

In ratings ranging from zero (intolerable) to 100 per cent (ideal), Vancouver scores 98 per cent, "benefiting from strong Canadian infrastructure," while Harare languishes on 37.5 "thanks to the unfolding crisis in Zimbabwe".

At the top end of the global easy-living scale, Vienna is in second place followed by Melbourne, Toronto, Perth, Calgary, Helsinki and Geneva, with Sydney and Zurich in joint ninth place.

The Japanese city of Osaka is just outside the top 10 on 13th place, and Tokyo is at joint 19th with Frankfurt.

European cities where life is generally not hard include Stockholm and Hamburg, Germany in 14th place, as well as Paris in 17th spot, Frankfurt in 19th, Copenhagen in 21st and Berlin in 22nd.

"With the exception of high scores in Australasia and some Asian centres, most of the better-scoring locations are based in the more developed regions of western Europe and North America," said the study.

A string of US cities fill the rankings from 30th to 50th position - Washington DC in 35th place, Los Angeles in 48th - followed by another smattering of European conurbations: London is in 51st spot, Rome 52nd while Athens has western Europe's lowest showing in 63rd spot, on 81.2 per cent.

Any city with a score above 80 per cent "will have few, if any, challenges to living standards," said the survey.


Not so easy

Lower down the orders come Moscow in 69th spot, Beijing in 76th, Johannesburg on joint 92nd with Brazil's Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, and Bangkok in 100th place.

The bottom rankings are occupied by a swathe of Asian and African cities: Manila in 108th, New Delhi in joint 114th spot with Cairo, Mumbai in 120th, Nairobi 122nd and Lusaka 126th.

Cities scoring below 50 per cent - which "present daily challenges to living standards" according to the authors - include Tehran in 129th place, Karachi, Pakistan in 135th and Lagos in 136th.

The bottom three are Algiers, Dhaka and Harare - where Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe called for leaders to "make Africa a continent of opportunity for all its people", as the country struggles to emerge from an economic meltdown.

Swiss and German cities dominate
top places of best cities in the world

28 April 2009: While Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city and the country’s financial capital, is no longer number one, three Swiss cities make it into the top 10 of 'best' cities in the world. According to new research, Vienna, Austria’s capital, is now the city most people would like to call their home. Geneva retains its position in third place, while Vancouver and Auckland are now joint fourth in the rankings of best cities in the world, a survey prepared by Mercer Consulting. Overall, European cities continue to dominate the top locations in this year’s survey, with German cities particularly well represented among the top 50. Düsseldorf, Munich and Frankfurt are all among the top 10 best cities.

French and British cities fare middling in the 2009 Mercer Quality of Living Survey. Paris drops from 32nd to 33rd place, while London is still only placed 38th. Birmingham and Glasgow are jointly at 56. In the US, the highest-ranking entry is Honolulu at position 29. Singapore (26) is the top-scoring Asian city followed by Tokyo at 35. Baghdad, ranking 215, remains at the bottom of the table.

The rankings are based on a point-scoring index, which sees Vienna score 108.6, and Baghdad 14.4. Cities are ranked against New York as the base city with an index score of 100. Mercer’s Quality of Living ranking covers 215 cities and is conducted to help governments and major companies place employees on international assignments.

This year’s ranking also identifies the cities with the best infrastructure based on electricity supply, water availability, telephone and mail services, public transport provision, traffic congestion and the range of international flights from local airports. Singapore is at the top of this index (score 109.1) followed by Munich in second place and Copenhagen in third. Japanese cities Tsukuba (4) and Yokohama (5) fill the next two slots, whilst Düsseldorf and Vancouver share sixth place. Baghdad ranks at the bottom of the table with a score of only 19.6.

Em thì sắp đặt chân tới Úc thôi nhưng là một người rất yêu du lịch và ham tìm tòi Đây là 1 chủ đề mà em rất thích. Vậy em xin mạnh dạn vote cho Gold Coast (QLD) là thành phố tốt nhất của Úc. Em có theo dõi 1 số forum của Úc với topic " Which is the best city in Australia?? " thì có đến 70% số người tham gia cho rằng Gold Coast là thành phố tốt nhất của Úc
Trên thực tế thì Gold Coast là 1 thành phố rất nổi tiếng về du lịch biển và đồng thời bang Queensland cũng là 1 trong những vùng có nền kinh tế tăng trưởng mạnh nhất của Úc. Thầy giáo dạy tiếng Anh của em ( là 1 người đã sống nhiều năm ở Úc) có kể rằng " đây là vùng mà Úc mở cửa cho Nhật đầu tư 50 năm để quy hoạch và phát triển". Đầu tiên thì em cũng không tin lắm nhưng nếu để ý kĩ, sẽ thấy 1 việc rất đặc biệt là trong khi mỗi bang chỉ có 1 thành phố có sân bay quốc tế thì riêng QLD có đến 3 sân bay quốc tế ở Brisbane, Gold Coast và Cairns. Càng đặc biệt hơn nữa là cả Gold Coast và Cairns đều có đường bay thẳng đến sân bay Narita của Nhật:-? trong khi Adelaide thì chưa mở đường bay này.
Trở lại với thành phố du lich Gold Coast thì ngoài du lịch ra thì rất nhiều nhà cao tầng, các công trình tầm cỡ quốc tế đang mọc lên ở đây, phát triển chủ yếu là " high-rise apartment" ở khu Surfers Paradise- 1 thiên đường mua sắm mới. Tòa nhà cao thứ nhất ở Úc và là "Tallest residential building in the world" là tháp Q1 cũng ở Gold Coast. Nơi đây cũng sở hữu kì quan thiên nhiên nổi tiếng thứ 2 ở Úc là Great Barrier Reef chỉ sau Uluru.
