There is the lastest ranking of top 500 world universities - a so-called Academic Ranking of World University 2005. This survey was condutec by Shanghai Jiao Tong University:

Whilst the University of Adelaide - the only SA representative - was merely stood at 203-300 of this ranking, 24-46 of the region and 7-9 of the national ranking.
Japan, China, India and South Korea have several representatives in this top 500. Singapore is the only representative of Southeast Asian region to be proud of ranking in top 300, including NUT and NTU.
Vietnam is targeting to drop its 2 representatives into regional ranking-2 National Universities: Hanoi and HCMC. Is it possible? to be honest, the answer could be a formidable task as it far lags behind of increasingly competent trend...
